The University of Salford’s forward-thinking approach has powered progress for 125 years. Today, our university community encompasses over 26,000 students, 2,800 staff and 200,000 alumni from all around the world. Our unstoppable institution is bolstered by countless industry initiatives and innovative research programmes, building a thriving education community at the heart of a powerful and connected region.  Our mission, to enrich lives, is built on four areas of focus: building prosperity and equity; enabling healthier living; improving the environment and sustainability; and developing cutting edge creative and innovative practice.

This is a unique moment in the history of Salford. Despite sector headwinds we are financially strong and continue to grow and invest in our people, digital and physical resources. There is exciting work to be done as we build on our academic strengths in keeping with our heritage as a 1960s Robbins era university and develop a contemporary education and research offer which is multi-disciplinary and uses collaborative advantage for the benefit of all our communities.

The School of Science, Engineering and Environment is central to the University’s identity as an institution rooted in the great industrial revolution of the 19th century and now responding to industry 4.0. It is a large School which was formed from the unification of three smaller Schools to provide opportunities for interdisciplinary working across its broad academic offer. Our work concentrates on the built, human and natural environments and technological and manufacturing advances that ensures a smart, sustainable future for all.  The School has been supported with considerable investment, with the construction of a new science building, Energy House 2.0 and the £16m North of England Robotics Innovation Centre.

A member of the University’s leadership team our Pro Vice-Chancellor Dean will provide School leadership as well as playing an active role on pan-institutional matters. The role requires a senior leader with an impressive academic background in a discipline relevant to those represented in the School. It is a School characterised by its scale and variety of the academic offer and it is essential that the PVC Dean understands what great leadership looks like, and the importance of demonstrating leadership behaviours by role modelling them. As we reshape the University’s leadership, we are looking for leaders who are compassionate, committed to equity, diversity and inclusion and whose natural approach to delivery is one of shared endeavour.
