A bit about the School of Health & Society…

Our School of Health & Society is one of the largest providers of nursing, midwifery and allied health professional education programmes in the UK, known for our track record of collaborating with a wide range of industry partners across health and social care to produce highly skilled graduates with real work experience. We are at an interesting time in the Higher Education sector, there is significant change in terms of oversight, student expectations and changing demographics and we are trying to do things differently so that we stay ahead of these changes.

Our connection to industry is stronger than ever, particularly in terms of our real-world research. Our Centre for Social and Health Research is an inter-disciplinary research Centre bringing together experts in criminology, digital information, mental health, midwifery, nursing, sociology, social policy and social work to address global social and health challenges. Our research aims to understand the delivery and receipt of interventions, practices and policies that face people, communities, services and places and often uses digital solutions to solve real world problems and make positive changes. http://hub.salford.ac.uk/health-and-society-research/home-page/centre-for-social-and-health-research/

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Research Assistant to support several health-related research projects. The main project the U-INconti study (http://hub.salford.ac.uk/u-inconti/) is a mixed methods study investigating the prevalence and incidence of urinary incontinence experienced by women (>55 years) when admitted to hospital. NHS real world data will be used (supported by NHS analysts), to better understand the number of women experiencing urinary incontinence both on admission and who develop it during their in-patient stay. The project also sets out to understand which clinical conditions are most associated with urinary incontinence for these women. The views and perceptions of nurses who care for these women during their admission will also be explored using interviews on one occasion.

A further study evaluates the inclusion of a new research and quality improvement education module within the undergraduate nursing programme. To establish whether undergraduate nurses gain confidence and understanding of clinical research conducted in the NHS.

So what will the role involve?

This is an ideal opportunity for an early career researcher to make a valuable contribution to impactful research, and to develop high-level skills in the area of developmental research. The role will involve managing the day to day running of the projects including both research and administrative tasks. The post-holder will be supported in undertaking literature reviews, undertaking participant recruitment and data collection (in particular interviewing nurses). The successful candidate will contribute to data analysis and dissemination of the research findings to both academic and public communities, for all projects.

We are looking for a highly motivated individual with an undergraduate degree in a health  or social sciences subject; experience of working with NHS Trusts, social care or other external organisations; and excellent communication and organisational skills are required.

The post is 0.8 FTE (full time equivalent) and is fixed term for seven months (until end September 2022). Alternative part-time hours can be considered for the right candidate.

Please contact Professor Heather Iles-Smith at H.M.Iles-Smith@salford.ac.uk for an informal discussion.
