Become a University Fellow, Become Unstoppable

Building on our strong REF2021 performance and in support of our new Innovation Strategy, the University of Salford is making a major new investment in outstanding early career researchers. We are recruiting a total of 20 new University Fellows, across our four Schools, which are prestigious appointments aimed at fostering world-leading research and innovation, in a supportive and nurturing environment.

Fellows will be on a demonstrable pathway to building an outstanding track record of research, innovation and impact. They will complement and extend research within defined areas of our portfolio (see below);  building novel activity. They will have a vision for their future leadership in research, developing new partnerships with public, private and third sector organisations, and innovating in research-led teaching. The scheme focusses on research in the first two years and over time the Fellows will take up an increasing portfolio of core academic activities, including teaching and academic leadership.

Within the School of Arts, Media and Creative Technology we are looking for talented individuals to join us who can advance our research in the following areas:

  • Transdisciplinary, Human-centred Design Innovation and Practice
  • Creative Technologies: Authenticity, Immersiveness and Representation

For more information on each of the areas, please see the further particulars document.

What is in it for you

Fellows will be recruited as a cohort beginning in August 2023 and will be supported to achieve their research and leadership ambitions through dedicated mentoring from academic leaders, peer support and a bespoke development programme aimed at providing the skills required for research and teaching leadership. In addition, Fellows will be awarded a start-up grant of £30K to establish their research.

Appointments will be open-ended and normally be made on the grade 8 academic scale (£43,414- £51,805), dependent on experience. It is anticipated that following successful completion of a five year, two stage supportive plan, Fellows will have built an evidence base to support an application for promotion to Reader.

How to Apply

When applying, it is essential that the following documents are attached (as PDFs):

  • A curriculum vitae, including: career/employment history and details of any career breaks; a summary of formal training and qualifications; relevant experience and evidence of esteem such as prizes and memberships of professional bodies and a list of publications/outputs. Please restrict the total length of the CV and outputs list to a maximum of five-pages of A4.
  • A covering letter addressing the person specification and stating which of the research area/s the application relates to (maximum three-pages).
  • A two-page outline of your proposed research programme, including: a research plan which particularly concentrates on for the first 2-3 years and highlights in particular: the novelty; details of any planned activities to maximise collaboration, partnership and knowledge exchange; plans for the £30K start-up funding.

Given the barriers facing female researchers, and those from black, Asian and minority ethnic communities, we strongly encourage applications from these groups. We are also open to applications from those with non-traditional career paths, including those with family, caring or health-related career breaks, or those who have moved to academia from a career in another sector.

The closing date for applications is 23:55 on 26th February 2023.
